News and Notices

One of our more recent students, Abidal, is a foundation student at UEA and has been the subject of a small piece of publicity for UEA, concluding with a posting on YouTube

As part of it Rachel Watkins came along to one of our classes to photograph and film Abidal (and he rest of the club) in action.

I've just received an email to say that an old Aikido friend, Paul Mitton, has died recently.

At the moment I don't have full details except that he died from pancreatic cancer on the 9th of November I believe.

Paul was the founder and leading light of the Bath Aikido Society, known as "Furo Ryu Aikido" (which translates as Hot Bath Aikido - giving some insight into Paul's mischevious character).

Paul was a regular attender at the NAF Summer Schools in Warminster, living in his little VW camper van.

He was always fun to train with, indeed, Paul was definitely one of those who trained "with a joyful heart".

The class on Monday 31st October was swelled by a group of students visiting from the Fakenham club.

Phil, a student at Fakenham, has been working with us for some time but, like so many others at the moment, is having to belt tighten. The upshot is that, rather then come in his own transport every week he's coming once a fortnight with one or more fellow students from Fakenham in a car-sharing exercise.

Tonight we had 5 extra students visiting from Fakenham, including Robert, one of the intructors, outnumbering our local students.

No Class Monday 18th July

The girls in the dance class which runs before us in the Owen Barnes Room just mentioned in passing that there would be Blood Donor session next week which was news to me

I've contacted Costessey Parish Council and they've confirmed it (and apologised profusely for not letting me know). Apparently they now have a list of dates for Blood Donor sessions running into next year which they're going to let me have so that I can update the class schedule.

It's rather short notice but I've texted and emailed all the active members. If you were planning to come along to watch a session with a view to joining, my apologies - please try later (as they say).

I've just finished my (3rd, if I remember correctly) First Aid requalification course.

It was a 2-day course with a local company and, even better, the course venue was just round the corner from where I live in Drayton Old Lodge.

There's a quite amazing ruin in the grounds (the Old Lodge itself) which I never knew about and I only live about 3 miles away!.

No significant changes to the basics this time. On the last course the CPR ratio of chest compressions to breaths changed to the current one of 30:1.

As always these are fascinating courses and, listening to the instructors and some of the other students, I realise how fortunate I am that I've never had to deal with more than a small cut.

At last the Spring Bank Holiday season is over and we have a clear run for the Summer months.

April was a particularly bad month with not only the Bank Holidays to contend with but also the Blood Transfusion Service taking over the room. Just to add insult to injury, the one untainted Monday in the month I came down with a bug and was unable to take the class at the same time that Mike double-booked himself so we missed that class as well, involving much texting, phoning and emailing at the last moment.

Now is the time

If you've been thinking of taking up Aikido with us but have been put off by all the breaks in April and May, now is the time to get in touch.

Another excellent local SAUK course hosted by the guys at Fakenham.

A special thanks to George for teaching a useful and thoughtful course. No fancy show-off techniques, just good, solid basics and things to make us think and take away to work on in our own dojos.

This is one of the really good things about these SAUK courses. There's no requirement to show off fancy stuff but there is time to consolidate basic understanding of aiki and to come together and work as a group, meet old friends and remind yourself that you're not alone in your confusion.

Summer School - La Colle Sur Loup
Française d'Aikido et de Budo

19th - 28th August 2011

with
Stéphane Benedetti
Yoshimitsu Yamada
Malcolm Tiki Shewan

Our friends in Cardiff organise an annual jaunt to La Colle Sur Loup in France where Française d'Aikido et de Budo have their residential Summer School. In previous years this was taught by Tamura sensei amongst others but, with Tamura's sad death earlier in the year, the course will be led by various of his students.

I've been sent details (here's a link) and they are asking if anyone from our club wants to come along.
